NRECA Supports the 2013 House and Senate Farm Bills

In letters to the Chairs and Ranking Members of the House and Senate Agriculture Committees, NRECA expressed its support for the 2013 House and Senate Farm Bills and thanked Sens. Debbie Stabenow and Thad Cochran and Reps. Frank Lucas and Collin Peterson for their leadership on these pieces of legislation. Both the Senate and the House bills contain enhancements to many Rural Development programs, including reauthorizing the Guaranteed Underwriter Loan program, allowing electric cooperatives to relend to their consumer-members at low rates for energy efficient improvements, revisions to the Rural Utilities Service broadband loan program, and updating a study on rail transportation in rural America, that are important to electric cooperatives

In the House bill, NRECA supports provisions including H.R. 935, the Reducing Regulatory Burdens Act of 2013, allowing the Rural Utilities Service to make loans for baseload generation, and clarifying that non-federal financing is not a major federal action.

In the Senate bill, NRECA opposes the language in the Senate Bill that would add new regulatory burdens on small, rural broadband providers.

NRECA urges the House Agriculture Committee to pass the Federal Agriculture Reform and Risk Management Act, and thanks the Senate Agriculture Committee for passing the Agriculture Reform, Food and Jobs Act.
