- Cyber Security Plan Template Update
To rework CRN’s Guide to Cyber Security and Risk Mitigation Planning and Cybe Security Plan Template with consideration of the Department of Energy’s recent organizational maturity model: Electric Subsector Cyber security Capability Maturity Model. The former has a focus on cyber security self-improvement and the latter cyber security self-assessment. Reworking CRN’s guide will facilitate achieving both goals.
- Cyber Security Training and Outreach
Leveraging work done by the Smarter Grid Demonstration Project to produce an all-day workshop that takes co-ops through the process of developing their own cyber security plans. The workshop covers risks posed by people, processes, and technology and also looks at NERC CIP compliance. Co-ops can purchase the course for presentation at an event or meeting.
- Next Generation Communications Guide
To provide co-ops with a structured approach to building out their communications infrastructure, including guidelines that co-ops can use to assess their own future communications requirements; analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of building their own networks versus buying bandwidth from a provider; and a step-by-step guide to decision-making for expanding telecommunications.
- Next Generation Utility Information Technology (IT) Architecture
Developing a guide for cooperatives to use in establishing their IT strategy for the Smarter Grid, with three main components: Assessment of Smarter Grid Requirements; Survey of Approaches; and Guidance. Guide will inform co-ops of strong courses of action and point out pitfalls to avoid.
- Secure Software Development Course
Providing co-ops with necessary guidance on how to do secure software development, including a short guide as instructional aid. Focus on ensuring attendees learn the basics of the process, understand the risks, become familiar with the artifacts of secure development (misuse cases, abuse cases, code scan, penetration reports, etc.), and have tools for penetration testing and secure code review.
- Smarter Grid Research Investment Model
Leveraging work done by the Smarter Grid Demonstration to provide co-ops with studies and tools to assist in cost/benefit evaluations for SG technology investments. Currently working on data handling modules that will store and manipulate GridLAB-D files and other data structures necessary to run simulations of distribution feeders.
Recently Completed Projects:
- Cyber Security E-Handbook
Report on IT security best practices, industry requirements and technologies, available online and on CD. Three related TechSurveillance articles: “Security by Design;” “Reducing Network Vulnerability Through Segmentation and Monitoring;” and “Managing Vendor Relationships for Better Cyber Security.”
- Using Data from Integrated Systems
Report on new knowledge mined from data brought together from a variety of systems, considering planning operations, maintenance and customer support. Includes interviews of both co-ops and vendors. Available online.
