In summer 2012 a team of thirty-two linemen and supervisors from 17 Indiana co-ops traveled to the rugged mountains of northwestern Guatemala. Their mission? To bring the miracle of power and light to three remote villages.
The Guatemala mission was a partnership between NRECA International Foundation (Foundation) and the Indiana Statewide Association, and represented a first for both organizations.
For everyone, it was a challenge quite different from any other they had faced before. The terrain was rugged, the working conditions primitive and the environment treacherous. At times the linemen were quite literally working in the clouds that covered the mountaintops.
The “Hoosier” crew met this challenge by constructing twenty miles of power lines (primary, secondary and service drops) across gorges, over mountains and above the jungle canopy to bring electricity for the first time to over 1,000 men, women and children, and change the lives of everyone involved at the same time.
