After decades of civil war in Sudan, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in June 2005 provided NRECA International a contract in the southern region to help with the rebuilding efforts in the village of Yei. NRECA International, in partnership with 15 US co-op volunteers, built a distribution system, installed street lighting, and established the Yei Electricity Cooperative (YECO). In May 2008, the utility was turned over to local management, and they’ve continued to grow and expand service.
This brochure and video were showcased at the International Luncheon during the 2009 NRECA annual meeting, where over 800 members from the U.S. co-ops saw the powerful impact volunteers have had on impoverished rural villages around the world. The brochure also highlights those co-ops and individuals that in 2008 supported the NRECA International Foundation and its mission of electrifying the world… one village at a time.
