- Advanced Power Electronics Demonstration
To provide engineering support for an active demonstration of a system using advanced power electronics to implement IEEE 1547.8 (the family of standards standard which regulates interconnection of distributed generation with the power system), to collect and analyze data and to report on the results. Demonstration will be tied to specific energy storage or photovoltaic system deployed at a co-op.
- BioDigester Technology — Case Studies
Initially planned as a symposium on status of biodigester technology; reallocated to the creation of 10 co-op case studies.
- Distributed and Utility-Scale Solar Power as Co-op Asset: Business Models and Financing Options
To assess prospects for electric co-ops to increase utilization of solar PV, considering latest developments in large-scale solar investments and their impacts. Focus on potential business models, including current leading PV technologies and vendors, and expected technology developments in the next 5 years. Report issued and available online.
- Energy Storage Monitoring, Lessons Learned, and Interconnection
To demonstrate the technical and economic viability of energy storage applications through peak shaving, arbitrage, transmission and distribution asset deferral and improved reliability.
- Energy Storage Toolkit
Create a supplement to Sandia National Laboratories’ DOE/EPRI Energy Storage Handbook (developed in collaboration with NRECA) to provide cooperative-specific guidance for producing effective RFPs by way of spec sheets, online training course and a financial screening tool.
- Plug-In Electric Vehicles Performance and Preparedness
To track developments of PEVs, their potential impacts on co-op systems and best practices to handle the new load. The project includes data and a report from Plug-in hybrid vehicle demonstration, an autopsy and analysis of a PHEV fire from 2008, as well as video and article on the Chevy Volt.
Recently Completed Projects:
- Energy Storage for Renewable Energy and Asset Deferral
Additional CRN Contact: Maurice Martin, Program Manager
Reporting on viability and economics of energy storage technology for asset deferral and renewable energy maximization, including: Tech Surveillance articles and report available online, and sessions at the 2010 and 2011 CRN Summit. Follow-up research underway.
- Plug-In Hybrid Vehicle Demonstration
Work with major automakers to test plug-in vehicles performance and participate in IEEE standards discussions, with focus on strong interest among co-ops to convert commercial hybrid vehicles to plug-ins. Partnered with Idaho National Laboratory to secure low cost PHEV kit installations, data loggers and data collection and processing. Testing results report issued, as well as PEV Impacts and Preparedness report. Continuing efforts into new PEV research opportunities.
- Residential Fuel Cell Demonstration
Field tests of residential fuel cells, funded by DOE and EPRI, with support from DOD and NYSERDA. Report online and CD version available.
